Serving Hilliard UMC provides many services for its congregation, its community, and the world at large. We hope that here each person can find an avenue for using their God-given gifts, as well as take advantage of the services we offer.
BREAKFAST AT NEW LIFE CHURCH On the second and fourth Sundays of the month, a team of persons from our congregation depart from HUMC at 6:30 am and assists others in preparing breakfast and a sack lunch for the homeless. The breakfast is served at the New Life United Methodist Church, 25 W. Fifth Avenue, Columbus (in the Short North).
FEEDING BY FAITH A team of people gathers on Saturday at the church on Saturday morning to prepare a hot breakfast. The meal is then transported and served at The United Methodist Free Store in south Columbus.
In partnership with Greater Columbus Habitat for Humanity, we volunteer to build affordable homes, empower families and develop communities. Our church family supports this mission by providing leadership, construction volunteers, and meals for volunteer workers.

Hilliard R.E.A.D.S. Literacy Program at HUMC We have been providing English as a Second Language classes for six months. We started this program with the help of the Columbus Literacy Program which received the Barbara Bush Family Literacy Grant. This grant paid for professional teachers in the adult and preschool classrooms. Unfortunately, we were notified in mid-July that the last day for our program would be July 24th. Open registration will be held in the social hall on Sept.15 6-8 pm (anyone can come) and Classes start on Sept 22.
This ministry has had a huge impact on our community. Prior to the summer break we were serving 65 students (adults and children) in need of learning English. There are currently 17 families on the waiting list and we continue to get new inquiries each week. We have 52 volunteers trained to offer tutoring services to these students. What we don’t have is money to pay for the teacher’s professional services. You may be asking, why can’t the teachers volunteer? Teaching English as a Second Language can be quite challenging, like most teaching positions. However, ESL students bring very different needs to the classroom. These needs are best served by a paid professional teacher. These teachers create and follow a learning curriculum as well as provide a specific lesson plan for each tutor to use. It is difficult to find volunteers who are willing to spend several hours each and every week providing this professional service.
We need to decide as a congregation if this is a ministry we want to continue. Teaching English is a way that we can help people help themselves. Our prayer is that the students will continue to learn, be able to find a job and pull themselves into a higher quality of life. We are applying for several grants to help us provide these services to our community but still need your help. If you feel that God is calling our congregation to continue this ministry, please label your donation as “Hilliard READS”.

Preschool - www.hilliardumcpreschool.org Hilliard United Methodist Church Pre-School is a half day program for pre-school children ages two and one-half through five. Our program aims to enhance the children socially, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, and provide opportunities to develop physically as well.
Our program is based on the child’s work-play. Play is the experience that absorbs children in thinking, problem solving, planning and using their imaginations. Children develop in all areas: intellectual, social, language, emotional, small and large muscle skills as they play. Other skills such as lengthening attention spans and gaining confidence in themselves emerge.
Our staff feels that every child needs to have a belief in human values-kindness, courage, honesty, generosity. Modeling these behaviors is the best way to teach young children. We believe that we need to be loving, caring persons. Children are loved because they exist as children of God. We hope to model our actions and words to show the caring ways of Christianity.
The Pre-School teaches in learning centers. Children learn best with “hands on” experiences. They become involved in something that interests them as they discover. Our group time increases as attention spans grow. Stories, puppets, games, role play, singing, finger play and creative movement are all a part of group times. Intellectual growth flourishes during these exciting group times and all during the session.
We want the children to feel they are loved, accepted, and secure. Limits are guides for behavior and safety. Feelings are legitimate and can be dealt with in positive ways.
Our staff feels privileged to share discoveries, experience new life and marvel at the beauty of the world with young children.
You are welcome to call the Pre-School office with any questions you might have about our HUMChurch Pre-School. Fall openings available.
We thank the congregation and church staff for your continued support for this outreach ministry of our church.
--------------------------- Our Church Pre-School was founded in February, 1971. Our program centers around the children. We want to help them grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially and provide opportunities for them for physical growth also. We believe that children should be loved, cherished and respected so that they are able to love and respect others. Hands on opportunities are an important part of our program. Children are eligible to come to Pre-School if they are 2 ½, 3, 4 or 5 years old on September 30 of the year they are enrolling in classes. Classes are offered both morning and afternoon. Tuition is paid monthly. The school year is September through the end of May. Scholarships, provided by annual Scholarship Sunday, are available. Call Robin Ozbolt, Director at 876-7180 for additional information or check out www.hilliardumcpreschool.org.
