Dr. Laura Kitchel hired as Traditional Music Director

The Hilliard UMC staff parish committee is pleased to announce that we have hired Dr. Laura Kitchel as our new Traditional Music Director.

The search team engaged a number of highly qualified candidates with an impressive range of experience and gifts.  We knew we were looking for someone with a strong vocal background, a collaborative spirit, a proven record of bringing out the best in people from a variety of backgrounds, and a heart open to what God continues to teach them in their journey as a disciple.  Laura met all of these criteria with a joyfulness at every step of the way.  She also is already a member here at Hilliard UMC and deeply connected to the vision of where we are headed as a church.

Laura is from Springfield, Ohio, where she was a member of High Street United Methodist Church and sang in their chancel choir for many years while growing up. An active church performer for many years, she is excited to begin conducting the Hilliard UMC Chancel Choir. She has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Bowling Green State University, a master’s degree in choral conducting from the University of Kentucky, and a PhD in music education from the University of Missouri. She has 15 years of experience teaching singers and choirs from elementary grades through college. After living out of the state for many years, Laura is happy to be back in her home state of Ohio with her husband, Tracy, and two daughters, Isabel and Violet. She loves to sing, to play the piano, and all things musical theater. In addition to her duties at Hilliard UMC, Laura will also be a lecturer at Ohio State and the director of the University Choir at OSU Marion in the fall.

Chancel Choir rehearses Wednesdays, 7:30-8:30pm, in either the choir room (Sanctuary building, room 301) or the Sanctuary. All adults and high school youth are invited to participate!

Welcome, Laura!
