Upcoming Adult Classes

These classes meet at the church and are designed to help us learn about Christian faith, grow in our faith, and make new Christian friends. To sign up: Contact Beth Palmer at humcadulted@yahoo.com, or watch for sign-up opportunities in the Sunday worship folders.  We order books based on sign-ups, so please let us know your plans (we never want the cost of a book to keep someone from taking a class; please sign up anyway!).  Childcare will be available for all classes. Also, there’s more to come, so stay tuned!

Reflect on The Miracle of Christmas using James W. Moore’s short book of the same name — think about “the miracle of God’s seeking, saving love for each one of us” and all the miracles of Christmas.  Meets 4 Wednesdays starting 11/29/06, 6:30-8:00 PM ($6 book), facilitated by Dannie Pierce.

The movie “The Nativity Story” arrives in theaters December 1, a Hollywood version of the lives of Mary and Joseph and of the birth of Jesus.  In this small group, read the novel together (an easy read), see the movie, and discuss it along with the stories of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.  Popular culture often gives us some great opportunities to discuss what we believe and, in the process, to grow closer to our Lord and Savior.  Meets 4 Wednesdays starting 11/29/06, 6:30-8:00 PM ($12 book), facilitated by Ed and Marilyn Hoeflinger.

Exercise, Inspirational Music, Prayer

Which caught your attention?  If any of these topics strikes your fancy, you may be interested in joining  TEAM F.I.T. (Faith In Training).  This free one-hour class will help participants to develop some “holy habits” in their life while enjoying inspirational music with others.  Objective:  To develop both a physical (light aerobic and floor exercise) and a spiritual habit (prayer).  The ultimate goal is to develop these habits as a regular part of our lives, as we learn that we should “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, (and) give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18), and “devote (ourselves) to prayer” (Colossians 4:2).  “Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord!”  Movement to express our joy in living, and to strengthen the body we’ve been blessed with, is combined with prayer.  With a Team effort, we’ll help each other become more F.I.T. as Christians.  Led by Donna McBride.  Wear comfortable clothes and good shoes for aerobics; bring a mat or thick towel for floor work, 1-5lb hand weights (optional), and water.  Meets Mondays and Thursdays starting September 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m., 7 weeks, CLC front room.

Faith Foundations

What are the basics of our Christian faith? A great class for those new to life in Christ, we’ll explore foundational questions such as “What do we believe?” and “Who is Jesus Christ?”  Begins the week of October 8 and runs for 8 weeks, led by Dannie Pierce, details to come.

The Purpose Driven Life

Did you miss this study when we did it awhile back?  Now’s your chance to explore the question, “What on earth am I here for?” through the best-selling book by Pastor Rick Warren.  Details to come, but look for this small group, short-term study to begin this Fall, led by Alan Davis.

Friends and Followers: This ongoing Sunday morning group meets throughout the year, and they study various works to deepen their Christian faith and friendships.  All are welcome to join at anytime throughout the year, for one week or all!  Sunday mornings, 9:30 a.m., room 305.  Contact Peter Hahn or Stephanie Harrell.

Seekers: Another ongoing Sunday morning class, all welcome anytime you want to join this thought-provoking group.  Sunday mornings, 9:30 a.m., Parlor.  Contact Lowell Bassett.

Disciple Bible Study I: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study is a rewarding long-term Bible study for those who want to make a commitment to dig deeply into the Bible.  This is the place to start if you’ve never taken a Disciple class before.  Disciple I gives equal time to the Old and New Testaments, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as the revelation of God, and it aims at transformation, not just information.  You’ll make great new Christian friends in a long-term small group such as this!  Facilitated by Roberta Moore.  Starts Sunday, September 10, 5:30-8:00 p.m., 34 weeks (meets through early June).  $30 study manual.

Also look for more information to come on these second-level, long-term Bible study groups (Start Sunday, September 10, 30-34 weeks, 5:30-8:00 p.m.).  (Please start with Disciple I.)

  • Disciple II: Into the Word, Into the World: Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts.

  • Disciple III: Remember Who You Are: Old Testament Prophets and Letters of Paul.

  • Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life: Ruth, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, and Daniel; Gospel of John, the letters of John, and James, Jude, and Revelation.

  • Christian Believer: Church history and doctrine, why we believe what we do.

  • Jesus in the Gospels: Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Adult Small Groups: In addition to these structured classes, the church has several ongoing small groups that usually meet in the homes of members and friends.  Some are book study groups, some are Christian fellowship groups, some are accountability groups.  If you want to join an existing small group (new members always welcome), or start your own, contact Beth Palmer (humcadulted@yahoo.com) for help, support, and/or ideas.  They’re simply an awesome way to make new Christian friends and grown in faith!

Stay tuned… More to come!

Youth

The leadership team has worked at developing a progressive program for the Hilliard United Methodist Church focusing on Outreach, Discipleship, Missions, Worship and Leadership.  This program is designed so that our youth will have experiences in all areas offered, so that they may develop their personal strengths and have guidance and support in their weaknesses.  We offer a wide range of activities from fun retreats to International Mission trips and large group events to small group discipleship studies.  Our youth have participated in missions to Jamaica, Mexico, Toronto, Chicago, New York, Kentucky, and Cincinnati.  Local missions have been supporting area groups such as The United Methodist Free-Store, Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Adopt a Family, Summer Camps for local inner-city children, helping church members with yard and house work.   Regular groups meet from September through May with special programming during the summer.  For more information, contact our Director of Youth, Jim Hurst: email jhurst@hilliardumc.org or 579-5924, or check out their web-site at  http://www.livewireyouth.org
