Substitutes Sought for Occasional Warehouse Custodial Work

We'd like to put together a list of folks to pitch in occasionally when our assistant custodian, Christie Blue, can't work her regular shift (vacation time off, etc.). There are a few Saturdays coming up in March and April when Christie needs to be out of town overnight with her daughter's volleyball team. Saturday is a lighter shift: 1-2 hours to spot-clean the restrooms, do a little vacuuming, and a couple other small tasks (anytime after 1pm, usually). If you're interested, please contact Beth Palmer, bpalmer@hilliardumc.org, 560-3808. We'll train you and pay you. Thanks!

On-Line Devotional Begins based on United Methodist Social Principles and Creed: a call to prayer for the General Conference of The United Methodist Church

In recognition of the 2008 General Conference of The United Methodist Church, a quadrennial gathering of denominational leaders worldwide, students, alumni, faculty, and staff at Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) have initiated a project to prayerfully reflect on the denomination's principles that address social and ethical issues. Church members and the public are invited to subscribe to an electronic "Daily Devotion" based on The United Methodist Church's Social Principles and Social Creed. The devotions will run from Wed., Feb. 6 (Ash Wednesday) through Fri., May 2 (the final day of General Conference). Instructions on how to subscribe to the daily devotions will be available through the MTSO home page (www.mtso.edu) beginning Monday, February 4.

Each day's devotion will be based on a specific section of the Social Principles. The purpose of MTSO's Daily Devotions is to raise awareness of the Social Principles and Social Creed, to serve as a resource for reflection throughout Lent and the Easter season, for prayerfully supporting the delegates who will gather for General Conference to make decisions for the entire denomination. The 2008 General Conference will convene from April 22 through May 2 in Fort Worth, TX. Located on U.S. Route 23 in Delaware, Methodist Theological School in Ohio is a graduate seminary of The United Methodist Church preparing people for service to the church and the world.

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

FEEDING BY FAITH needs Financial Support

Feeding By Faith has been serving the community at the United Methodist Free Store/Church for All People now for six years. Feeding By Faith is thankful for all the individual volunteers and groups that have served over the years. The ministry has been blessed with donations of bagels and pastries from Panera Bread and Starbucks, an unknown person that provides loaves of bread each week, and now Pizza Hut will be donating personal pan pizzas (already cooked) to distribute on Saturday mornings! The Feeding By Faith Ministry runs strictly on donations of food, paper products and gifts to purchase eggs, meat and potatoes, cheese, milk, juice and fruit. An example of a typical morning - 30 dozen eggs each week are cooked, 10 pounds of tater tots, 1 case of bananas, at least 5 gallons of milk and juice, plus boxes of dry cereal (not to mention ham and cheese to go with the eggs). Feeding By Faith is in need of funds to continue this all important ministry. Prayerfully consider giving to the Feeding By Faith fund so HUMC can continue its outreach to those in the Parsons Avenue area. Any questions, do not hesitate to e-mail Susan Hurst at jhurst1@columbus.rr.com or phone: 614-579-7235. Thank you again for all your continued prayers and support.

Mission Item for May: Third Run of the Undy 500!

The Undy 500 is back for the May mission item! We are collecting undergarments for the Methodist Free Store. Be sure to check store ads and look for multi-packs (each piece counts separately). Our goal is 500 items and we can do it! Just think: If 100 families, couples or individuals bought one package of 6 items, we would exceed our goal by 100! If 50 bought two packages, and so on. You get the idea. We are collecting primarily boxers, briefs, and bras, but socks are welcome too. All sizes are appreciated. The Helper Hampers in the Warehouse entryway and the Narthex (across from the Sanctuary doors) will be ready to receive-let's fill 'em up!

Hilliard READS Needs Tutors

Hilliard READS (adult English classes) needs volunteers to work with beginner students on a/b/c's, sight words, etc. Curriculum will be provided. We also need volunteers to float in the intermediate class to help with questions or individual work as the teacher conducts class. Classes are Mondays and Thursdays, 6-8:30 p.m., in the Sanctuary building classrooms. Classes run through May 19 (year-end banquet on May 22).

If you are able to help, please sign up on the Opportunity Sheet or contact Stephanie Harrell @ 529-8363 or stephrogg@netscape.net. Volunteers truly make the difference! Conversational English is so helpful and relationships built between volunteers and students directly impacts attendance in class and at the social events during the year--they enjoy working with you and want to get to know you more!

RECURRING ITEMS

Office Hours

The church office will be officially open from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lynda and Lois will continue to work their usual hours, so there will be secretarial/administrative staff in the office from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except when they are at lunch. The reason for this change in “official hours” is greater avoidance of having one person alone in the office. We will, of course, continue to have receptionists in the 9:00 to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. time slots.

Weather Reminder

When Hilliard City Schools are closed due to weather, all activities at the church are cancelled. (Adult spiritual formation classes may meet at their own discretion, but childcare will not be provided; check with your facilitator.)

Sip and Chat

Donuts, home-made goodies, coffee, and tea are available every Sunday, so take time to sip something warm and chat with visitors and your HUMC friends.

Nametags Help Welcome Newcomers

As spring comes, we experience an influx of new folks.   Guests have stated that they feel less strange when they can see someone’s name.  Besides, not all of us learn names just by hearing them.  Many of us need to see a name as well.   Please make wearing your nametag a part of your hospitality to guests.  As you go out the door, just put your tag into the basket.  It will be alphabetized and rehung later, so you can find it easily the next week.

If you do not find your name on the kiosk, please notify the person at the hospitality table, and one will be made for you immediately.   We don’t want to overlook anyone.

New Prayer Brochure

In the pew racks is an attractive brochure entitled, “Hilliard United Methodist Church: a Praying Congregation.”  It was created and produced by Prayer Partners, a new prayer ministry.  The brochure describes ways to pray for the church, its activities, leaders, and those who participate in its many programs and services.  It also explains two other prayer ministries at Hilliard United Methodist Church, Prayer Team for crisis prayers and Tele-Care for congregational contact and prayer.

Please take a brochure home or simply use it to guide your prayer as you enter the Sanctuary.  Prayer Partners know that if they invite the presence of the Holy Spirit in more regular and intentional ways, the spiritual vitality of the worship experience will be enhanced for everyone.  In addition to the brochure and their covenant to pray for each worship service, Prayer Partners meet once a month to walk through the Sanctuary Building and pray for the activities, the leaders, and the participants in every room.  If you would like to join this group, please contact Virginia Blasingame or 870-7480.

Prescription Drug Assistance

No Prescription Insurance? Can't afford your medicine? Get your medications free. The free Medicine Foundation helps those in need. Call toll-free 1-888-812-5152 to request an application or apply directly online at www.FreeMedicine.com

Membership at HUMC

Service and ministry opportunities are open to everyone at Hilliard United Methodist Church (HUMC), not just members.  However, membership is an outward sign of an inner commitment to spiritual growth and support of church ministries.  Whether by profession of faith (for those who have not been members of a church) or transfer (for those who have previous church membership), all are welcome to join HUMC.   Orientation groups are scheduled periodically.  Contact Virginia Blasingame at 870-7480 or if you have questions about the church, expectations of membership or enrollment in New Member Orientation.
